Remembering Pfc. Austin Barrett

The body of a local soldier killed while serving in Afghanistan arrived Monday morning at Greenville/Spartanburg Airport.


PFC. Barrett Austin was just 20-years-old when he died on April 21st. He was killed by injuries he suffered from an IED blast to his vehicle. Austin was stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia and was in his first year of military service.


He graduated from Pickens High School in 2011 and married his high school sweetheart last year. Fellow veterans escorted Austin's body from the airport.


Rock Springs Baptist Church will host memorial services for Barrett Austin Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held at the same church at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
