Rescue Squad Break-In

Updated: Monday, February 17 2014, 09:20 PM EST
A Bryson City man is accused of breaking into the Swain County Rescue Squad, stealing a truck and life-saving equipment, and leading police on a high speed chase. 32-year-old Dennis McGaha faces several charges including larceny, burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon on a government official.

Police say on Friday, McGaha loaded a rescue squad pick-up truck full of equipment, and then crashed through the garage door. They say he eventually crashed into a guard rail off Alarka Road. But when an officer tried to take him into custody, Bryson City Assistant Police Chief James Jones says McGaha tried to hit the officer with the truck.

"I believe he was under the influence of methamphetamine and or marijuana," says Jones.

Despite the theft, the public's needs were still being met.
"Actually the county was never without rescue service even though we were down. We had back-up through the fire departments here," said Swain County Rescue Squad Chief Harold Cochran.

Cochran says security cameras and burglar alarms will now be added to the rescue squad building.

McGaha remains in jail on $150,000 bond. He has a court date scheduled for March 6th.
