Rutherford Co. Storm Reaction

Updated: Wednesday, February 12 2014, 07:01 PM EST
Snow began falling in Rutherford County around noon and hasn't stopped since.

In Forest City, some residents lost power when a car hit a pole. An entire neighborhood on Brackett Road lost power for about an hour because of the crash.

Forest City police say a driver hit the pole and damaged it. Rescue workers say they took the driver to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Forest City electric crews replaced the pole and untangled wires.

The snow started around noon Wednesday and has been steady all day. After consulting with the National Weather Service, emergency officials decided to put the county on alert.

Roger Hollifield, Emergency Management Director, "we went ahead and declared a State of Emergency at 8:30 this morning, to go ahead and take care of that in the event that we start having issues. We've already got that in place, once we put that in place, that helps us to direct resources within the county and move things more efficiently."

That means that the county's rescue workers are geared up and on call. It also means that people should prepare for power outages as the snow becomes heavier and threatens to shove trees over power lines.

Officials say if you must drive, remember that with temperatures this low ice is always a factor and a crash in this weather could have life-threatening consequences.Rutherford Co. Storm Reaction
