Snow in Higher Elevations

Updated: Tuesday, February 19 2013, 08:13 PM EST

Winter is still very much with us. Overnight snow fell in many places in the mountains. That’s especially true in our higher elevations.

Along the Haywood-Jackson county line on Soco Mountain, snow fell overnight and into the middle of the day on Tuesday, accumulating 3 to 4 inches. The nearby Cataloochee ski area saw 5 inches of fresh show. Plows worked to clear Highway19 between Maggie Valley and Cherokee, but wind and fog made for tricky driving condition.

These snowfalls can be deceptive for both visitors and residents. Lower elevations didn't see much snow at all, if any, so be aware if you have plans to go up in elevation. The roads may be slippery.

Jackson County cancelled school on Tuesday. Highway 19 was cleared but drivers are warned to be aware of black ice and be prepared with warm clothes, food, and water.
