Snowy Conditions Up High

This week’s snow accumulation was not wide-spread, but the higher elevations saw several inches.
Four to six inches fell at the Cataloochee Ski Area. Some visitors from Florida enjoyed skiing for the first time. For local businesses that depend on snow to bring in revenues, this has been a hard season.
Cataloochee General Manager Chris Bates says the warmth and rain have hurt the bottom line, but he expects the snow heading in to the long Martin Luther King holiday will help turn things around. He says three-quarters of the mountain is open with 11 trails, with hopes of opening more to the top no later than Sunday.
Friday’s sunshine melted a lot of snow, but freezing temperatures overnight may cause black ice conditions.
