Trooper Shot in Stable Condition

State Highway Patrol trooper Michael Potts, who was shot during a traffic stop in Durham Monday evening remains in fair and stable condition. Trooper Potts, 42, was shot following a stop on U.S. Highway 70 near Cheek Road.
“We ask that everyone please keep Trooper Potts and his family in your thoughts and prayers,” said Department of Public Safety Secretary Kieran J. Shanahan. “We truly appreciate the strong and swift response we have received from our law enforcement partners assisting at the scene of the shooting and quickly jumping into action to try and apprehend the shooter.”
The SHP is working with the Durham Police Department, the lead agency in the shooting investigation. The State Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshals Service, the Durham Sheriff’s Office, and multiple other federal, state and local law enforcement have been aiding in the investigation.
Trooper Potts is an 11-year veteran who joined the patrol August 2001. He is assigned to the Durham district office.
