Update: Asheville Beating Death Arrest

Updated: Wednesday, February 26 2014, 09:44 PM EST
A man from Asheville is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of a man from Clyde.

43-year-old Gary Jenkins faces a charge of first-degree murder for the beating death of Clyde resident, Richard Smith.

Jenkins is currently being held in the Buncombe County Detention Center. The court denied him bond.

Just after 9 p.m. Tuesday, police got the call to the Pisgah View Apartments. In unit 25-B they found 59-year-old Smith. Emergency crews took him to Mission Hospital, where he later died. The police report lists the weapon as a blunt object.

A neighbor says Jenkins used a walking stick and that Smith and Jenkins knew each other and often spent time partying at the apartments. A friend also says she knew something terrible had happened as soon as she saw Gary Jenkins.

"He came next door to where I was hanging out and he had the stick in his hand. He was like, I need help. I think i just killed somebody," said Shyanna Martin.

Police say they have to wait for autopsy results to confirm a cause of death.

The police report also indicates "others involved." Two other people were questioned, but no one else has been charged.Update: Asheville Beating Death Arrest
