Wild Weather Hits the Mountains

Updated: Wednesday, February 19 2014, 08:28 PM EST
Reports of a hailstorm, a severe thunderstorm, a tornado warning – and then a lovely spring-like Wednesday afternoon. It was the spectrum today across the mountains.

For days, the weather has been wild and Wednesday appears a perfect example of just how hard to judge it’s been – from what to wear when you leave your house to whether you need to seek cover.  We have seen extreme weather that changed the minute.

In Barker’s Creek there was a hail storm this morning. Hours before that a family home in Skyland was hit by a lightning bolt, which ignited the attic. Sleds were still sitting on the front porch hours later, next to the ruler that had measured ten inches of snow in the front yard exactly one week ago. Then in Mitchell County – a business was hit by another bolt causing thousands in damages.

Asheville restaurants have bringing in patio furniture then putting it back out again – hour by hour. And residents at Carrier Park packed bags of clothes Wednesday – in case the temperature dropped or rose significantly in the time it took to take a casual bike ride.
