Winter's Impact On Schools
Updated: Friday, March 8 2013, 09:46 PM EST
The snow we've already had this season is already taking its toll on some mountain school districts.
Only two days of class have been canceled for Buncombe County so far, but that's not the case for those counties that border Tennessee. Madison tops the list at eleven days missed. Yancey is right behind at ten. Haywood at five and Henderson at only one.
The calendar-counting does not figure in those two-hour delays and early dismissals, which have traditionally been looked on as school days completed. Not beginning next year. New legislation will require either 1,025 instructional hours or 185 days complete school days. The rules get tougher and the risk of Saturday classes or shorter summers more likely.
