Zoning Change Approved

Asheville City Council unanimously decides to allow a drive-thru restaurant on Merrimon Avenue. The project had drawn vocal criticism from neighbors over increased traffic and their objection to another fast food franchise along that busy stretch of street.
For people of the Five Points neighborhood, traffic has been the major concern. Residents say the addition of Harris-Teeter and Trader Joe's across the street is already too much to handle.
The developer made some concessions in his request for a zoning-variance on the drive-thru part of the deal. That mitigation comes in the form of conditions like putting the drive-thru as close to Merrimon Avenue as possible, restricting hours of operation from 6 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. and a contribution of $30,000 for improvements at three neighborhood intersections.
