Landslide Destroys Home

This weekend's heavy rain causes a wash-out in Madison County, taking part of a hillside down onto a home below. The people who live there were away at the time and dodged disaster. It happened Sunday on Robert's Hill Road just outside Marshall.
Part of a steep hillside had been taken down by just too much moisture. Mud and water rushed down and pushed the house right off its foundation. The people who lived there, Helen Connor and Brenda Clements, happened to be away at church when the power of all that saturated soil was unleashed.
"The way that furniture had turned over, if Brenda had been in her bed it would have killed her because that great big TV went right in the center of her bed," said Connor.
A NCDOT crew is removing Robert's Hill Road above the house and replacing it. The job could take as long as three days. Drivers should follow the detour.
Helen, Brenda and two grand children will stay with relatives for now. Their house is a total loss. Emergency officials and church groups are now scrambling to help them out in a rough situation.
