Patton Park Fish Kill

Updated: Monday, April 8 2013, 05:01 PM EDT

Visitors at a Hendersonville city park are shocked to see dozens of dead fish on the bottom of a stream.

State water quality officials say they found about 100 dead fish lying in Brittain Creek on the park property. Visitors tell News 13 they were keeping their pets and children away from the stream until officials have answers about what killed the fish. Some say they suspect someone is dumping something upstream that sometimes makes the water murky.

State workers collected some samples, but there’s no report on what killed the fish. Henderson County’s Environmental and Conservation Organization, or ECO, monitors the stream and took test samples shortly after the kill was reported Tuesday. They’re concerned about kids and pets that often play in the creek.

State officials say it’s hard to identify what killed the fish because the pollutants are quickly washed downstream. ECO plans to continue testing in the weeks ahead.
