Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx has officially been tapped by the president for the job of transportation secretary. The mayor was in the nation's capital Monday for the announcement.
Foxx has avoided addressing rumors of his nomination for the past few weeks, even sidestepping questions about the reason behind a recent visit to Washington, D.C.
He will still need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Foxx would replace outgoing Secretary Ray Lahood.
Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy feels Foxx could help improve the city's transportation system, including issues with the Asheville Regional Airport and funding for I-26. Since Foxx was elected in 2009, Mayor Bellamy has formed a strong professional and personal relationship with Foxx. Mayor Bellamy says he would bring a wealth of knowledge to the position.
U.S. Sentator Kay Hagen took to Twitter about Foxx monday. She tweeted "Mayor Foxx has deep understanding of urgent need to rebuild infrastructure to maintain a strong and growing economy. He will be a strong leader."
