Rock Removed, Chimney Rock Reopens

A boulder that's been teetering above the main road through Chimney Rock State Park has finally come down.
At about 3 p.m. Thursday the rock that drew safety concerns which have had the park closed since April 10 finally fell.
"That rock took a lot of work ... to get it down," said Dayna Regerro, an event planner for the park. "Yhey used an expansion agent, they chipped away at it with various tools large and small, and they used a little bit of dynamite on it as well."
Friday afternoon the pile of large rocks - which had once been the infamous car-sized boulder - sat along the edge of the main road that snakes up to the top of the mountain.
North Carolina Department of Transportation crews had been working for days to remove the boulder, in the end chopping a tree down to loosen the rock.
