STEM High School Approved

Western North Carolina's largest school district gets the go-ahead to renovate an old building and turn it into a state of the art facility that will focus on educating high school students for high-tech careers.  

STEM schools have caught-on across the country and this will be a first for the mountains. The new high school that would emphasize science, technology, engineering and math.

The high school will be located in West Asheville at the former site of the Career Technical Education Center. The shell of the old building will be renovated at a cost of $5.5 million dollars with most of the funding coming from the North Carolina Education Lottery.

The STEM concept is intended to provide a specialized, state of the art curriculum with a focus on getting students ready for high-tech careers. That's something President Obama talked about at Linamar last week and is in the education bill Governor McCrory signed Tuesday.
