For Cruising the Carolinas this week, we take travelers along the Old Asheville Highway, which was how travelers used to get to Johnson City pre-I-26.  Start off by heading north on I-26 towards Johnson City, TNheading past Weaverville, Barnardsville, and Mars Hill.  Get off at Exit 9 (Burnsville/Spruce Pine Exit) and make almost an immediate left onto US-23.   Follow US-23 for about 23 miles as it winds through the ridges and valleys of the NC/TN border until in you come to the intersection of US-19W (Spivey Mountain Road).

Turn right onto US-19W and head back towards Burnsville, this stretch of road can be curvy so be careful of sharp turns.  After 28 miles, US"19W will intersect with US-19E to form US-19, head right towards Mars Hill and head back to US-26, completing the loop.
