Trip 17 - White Water Falls Loop - Tips

  • Be sure to follow all traffic laws and speed limits.
  • Whitewater Falls at 411 feet, is the tallest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains.  There is a visitor access area ($2 fee per car) which you can take a small hike to various spots which overlook the waterfalls.
  • Be sure to stay on the designated trails and not try to wander close to the falls, the fences and warning signs (and the death counter) are there for a reason.
  • Off of Wigington Road is a scenic overlook which provides great views of Lake Jocassee and the South Carolina Upstate.
  • Off of NC-107 is Silver Run Falls.  Nowhere near the size of Whitewater Falls (25 in height), Silver Run Falls provides visitors with a short, easy hike, and a small pool at its base.  The trailhead is located off NC-107 and there is a small parking area and US Forest Service sign noting the spot.
  • There is also a Lower Whitewater Falls located just down from the primary falls.  To get to them, you need to access the Duke Power Bad Creek Project (open 6am-6pm through an automatic gate) take Bad Creek Road to the Foothills Trail trailhead.
