UNC-ASHEVILLE GETS WIN OVER CSU

UNC Asheville pounded out 22 hits and scored 11 runs as the Bulldogs salvaged the final game of its Big South Conference series with Charleston Southern on Sunday with an 11-7 victory. Asheville (22-30, 5-13 BSC) was led at the plate by a trio of players with four hits each. Justin Schumer, Chris Freeman and Catlin Carter had four hits on the day for the home team. Senior right-hander Graham Baughn earned the win for Asheville by pitching in-and-out of trouble for seven innings to raise his record to 2-1. He scattered nine hits, allowed five runs, struck out four and walked three. The Buccaneers (18-30, 6-12 BSC) had 10 hits in the game as Mark Perry and Steve Antolik had two hits. Perry had a two-run single for CSU in the fourth inning, while Keith Hustedt had a pinch-hit two run homer in the eighth inning. Asheville jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings as it battered CSU starter Jason Cadenhead (1-2) with seven hits. Schumer had two hits in the first two innings, including a run-scoring single in the second inning. The Bucs got back in the game in the fourth with three runs. The big hit was Perry’s bad-hop two-run single. The Bulldogs came back with three runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Reed Krieser and a two-run single by Freeman to push the lead back to 7-3. Charleston Southern rallied to close to 8-7 with two runs in the seventh and eighth innings as Hustedt hit his pinch-hit homer in the eighth. Freeman hit a solo homer for the Bulldogs in the seventh to allow Asheville to keep the lead. The home team put the game away with three runs in the eighth inning, all the run scored after two outs. Baatz’s run-scoring single plated Elliott Arrington. A single from Carter scored Baatz. Kevin Mattison finished the uprising with a run-scoring double. Schumer got the Buccaneers out in order in the ninth to give Asheville the win. UNC Asheville plays next Tuesday night against Appalachian State at McCormick Field starting at 7 p.m.

Madison's Weaver MVP In State Track Meet

Madison High's Josey Weaver caused quite a commotion at the 2A state track meet in Greensboro. The senior won the pole vault at 13 feet 6 inches, then won the 32 hundred meter run in 9 minutes 58.49 seconds. His heroics garnered him MVP honors. East Henderson's Blake Bishop was second in the pole vault while Owen's Robert Dobbs finished second to Weaver in the 32 hundred meters.
Brevard's 3200 meter relay team of Luke Anton, John Burrows, John Guice, and Hunter Massingale took the top spot with the Blue Devils 1600 relay team also winning. The 1600 relay team made up of Massingale, Ethan Babin, Brian Carrington, and A.J. Zandecki.
Shelby won the men's meet with North Rowan second, Owen finished third, Madison was sixth and Brevard eleventh. In the women's competition, North Henderson's Felisha Garren won the 400 meter dash with a school record 56.75 seconds. Cummings won the state title while North came in eighth and East Henderson fourteenth.

Charleston, S.C. – Western Carolina junior Mike Tavernier scattered six base hits while limiting The Citadel to three runs as the Catamount offense pounded out 18 base hits in an 11-3 victory in game one of its Southern Conference series Friday night under the lights at Riley Park. WCU used a five-run fifth inning to seize control of the game to improve to 25-24 overall, 11-11 in conference play, stretching its current winning streak to a season-high tying six games.

UNCA Blows Big Lead, Fall To Charleston Southern

ASHEVILLE, N.C.—Charleston Southern scored eight runs in the top of the ninth inning highlighted by a grand slam by Mark Perry and a three-run homer by Tom Burkett to defeat UNC Asheville 10-6 in game one of a three-game series at Greenwood Field on Friday afternoon.
Asheville (21-29, 4-12 Big South) starter Alan DeRatt pitched eight inning allowing two runs on four hits and struck out a season-high 10 batters before handing the game over to the bullpen with a 6-2 lead.
The two teams will play again on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game was originally schedule for 2 p.m. but has been push back an hour due to Graduation at UNC Asheville. Scheduled starters are Michael Bogaert for UNC Asheville against Andrew Markham for Charleston Southern. The game can be heard live on uncabulldogs.com beginning at 2:50 p.m.
