Tyler Hansbrough and Ty Lawson each had 21 points Friday night to help North Carolina crush Mount St. Mary's 113-74 in the first round of the East Regional.
The Tarheels scored the first seven points of the game delighting the pro-North Carolina crowd, as thousands of blue-clad fans filled the RBC Center, located a short drive from the Chapel Hill campus. Ironically RBC is the home of rival N.C. State, but it was a home away from home for the Heels Friday night.
North Carolina led 60-41 at the half and romped their way to the opening night win.
Wayne Ellington added 16 points for the Tar Heels (33-2), who have won 12 straight and continued their near-perfect run in NCAA games played in their home state. North Carolina improved to 22-1 in those games.
Two walk-ons from Western North Carolina, J.B. Tanner of West Henderson and Patrick Moody of Roberson both played and scored. Tanner hit a three pointer, while Moody put in two free throws.
