Top Stories - Sierra Nevada Coming to WNC

It's official.  The country's leading craft beer maker Sierra Nevada is coming to the mountains.

As News 13 first reported yesterday, the California-based brewer will build its new facility at the Ferncliff Industrial Park in Mills River, and is expected to create 95 full-time jobs and 80 part-time jobs.  Salaries will vary by function, but the average annual wage will be $41,526 plus benefits.  There will also be about 60 construction and mechanical jobs during the 24-month building phase.

North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue joined local leaders and officials from Sierra Nevada, including CEO ken Grossman, in making the announcement in Mills River this afternoon.

The town of Mills River and Henderson County commissioners approved nearly $4,000,000 dollars worth of economic incentives to lure Sierra Nevada to the mountains.

We'll have much more on this story tonight on News 13 at 5pm and 6pm.

Another Republican files for NC governor's race
February 22, 2012 22:29 GMT

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Pat McCrory has a primary opponent.

A list on the State Board of Elections web site says Fayetteville resident James Harney filed Wednesday to run as a GOP candidate for governor. Harney didn't immediately return a phone call seeking comment, but his entry means McCrory will have to run some kind of campaign for the May 8 primary.

McCrory has been considered the presumptive GOP nominee and spent the past several months trying to clear the field of high-profile candidates through speeches to party groups and fundraising. The former Charlotte mayor narrowly lost to Democrat Beverly Perdue in the 2008 general election. She isn't seeking a second term but at least four other Democrats are in the race.
