Remains Found In West Asheville Near Smoky Park Highway

Police are investigating remains found this morning behind the Waffle House on Smoky Park Highway in Asheville.

A railroad worker found the remains in the woods, about a quarter-mile behind the restaurant. Police are treating the case as a homicide. They say the body was badly decomposed and had been there for months, maybe even a year.

An autopsy report says the remains were those of a white male, 35 to 45 years old. That report also confirmed a gunshot wound to the head, though it did not say if it was self-inflicted. Authorities are still waiting for dental records to help identify the man.
