Nine-year-old Juan Francisco Rodriguez is in stable condition at Mission Hospital after being hit by a car outside the mobile home park where he lives. Asheville police say 25-year-old Manuel Martinez hit the young boy and fled the scene. Officers caught up with Martinez at a nearby gas station and charged with felony hit and run and DWI. Martinez had a blood alcohol level of .02.
Rodriguez was hit around 2:30 Sunday afternoon near the mailbox station at Lakeview Mobile Home Park off Long Shoals Road. Witnesses say they saw the driver horsing around with his passenger before hitting Rodriguez. Emergency crews stabilized the boy before taking him to the hospital. Family friends tell us Rodriguez has a broken hip.
Asheville police also arrested Martinez`s passenger, 29-year-old Marvin David Garcia-Hernandez, with felony hit and run. Both men had open alcoholic beverages in the car.
