A pioneer in America's civil rights movement is in Asheville. Minnijean Brown-Trickey is one of the Little Rock Nine students who integrated an Arkansas high school in 1957. Minnijean is in Asheville after speaking at the local chapter of the NAACP's banquet. Today, she shared her story with Vance Elementary School 5th graders.
Brown-Trickey shared how she and the eight other African-American students who chose to go to Central High School received death threats, but continued to pursue their education. She encouraged the students to make a difference, saying you're never too young.
Brown-Trickey, a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Freedom, will speak at Reynolds High School, Asheville Middle School, Asheville High School and the Building Bridges program tomorrow.
