Sheriff's Spending Questioned

Polk County commissioners say they want to know if Sheriff Chris Abril used drug seizure money to pay a questionable charge on the county credit card. Sheriff Abril charged $333 to his county credit card when he went to New Jersey to be the grand marshal in a parade. That money was used for a rental car. Commissioners say that was an inappropriate use of the card based on the county's travel policy. Sheriff Abril reimbursed the county with money from the Polk County sheriff's office special jail and drug fund. County commissioners want to know if the money is county money or drug seizure money. Typically, drug seizure money must be earmarked and is used for things like equipment and training. Sheriff Abril voluntarily returned his credit card to the county last week. He was not at tonight's meeting because his chief deputy says he had personal matters to attend to. County commissioners say they want a new credit card policy written to prevent a situation like this in the future.
