A missing McDowell County teen is back home safe today.
Authorities with the McDowell County Sheriff's Office said 15-year-old Brittany Stevens was found in an apartment in the Chicago area this past Saturday.
Stevens' aunt reported her missing on June 13th.
Authorities said it's believed Stevens left, voluntarily, with 25-year-old Edgar Soto, an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
Right now, Soto is charged with second-degree kidnapping because of Stevens' age.
Soto is in custody in Chicago and is awaiting extradition to McDowell County.
"There's a possibility it may go to the Federal level if the kidnapping charge stays in place. She was taken across state lines. She's only 15. And there were other things involved that could elevate that," said Lt. Dan Shook with the McDowell County Sheriff's Office.
Shook said he expects to interview Stevens today in the hopes of learning more about the case.
