An eight week old puppy is dragged up and down Montford's sidewalks. Asheville police arrested two men after witnesses called 911 about the bloodied and abused dog.
Two strangers likely saved its life. Charity Bradley works at the Montford convenience store and noticed a man put the puppy in a plastic bag outside. Bradley said, "It was covered totally in blood, couldn't move, flopped over on its side just laying there."
Troy Leeper walked up and heard Bradley asking for the dog and also stepped in. Leeper said, "It was obvious the puppy was bleeding from all four paws, had its eyes closed, and yet he was still jerking on the leash trying to get it to stand up and walk."
The suspects picked up the dog and started walking up the street. Leeper called 911 and followed the men until police arrived.
The puppy was given antibiotics and is doing much better.
49-year-old Richard Brent and 58-year-old James Drew are charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty. Drew has not been arrested yet.
