They've become a source of pride here in the mountains. But, could a proposed tax put local breweries out of business? Craft brewers believe they're being unfairly targeted and that could put an end to their passion. Heinzellmannchen Brewery in Sylva is one of those concerned crafters. The General Assembly is considering increasing the excise tax on beer and wine basing it on alcohol content. Craft brews tend to have higher alcohol content than the mass produced beers which would greatly affect how much their product is taxed. Several excise tax proposals are in committee as the state legislature works on its budget.
