Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

It's a problem that's growing all across Western North Carolina, fetal alcohol syndrome, or FAS.
Officials say the big problem is binge drinking. With 50% of the births in the U.S. being unplanned, and bingeing on the rise, the number of fetal alcohol cases is also rising.
Fetal alcohol syndrome can cause severe problems with motor and developmental skills.
Now, Mission Hospitals Fullerton Genetics Center has won a grant to warn new moms, that drinking anything while pregnant, could be devastating to your child.
If you suspect that your child may have suffered because of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, there is help. Ask your pediatrician or seek out child development services in your community, which can assist families facing FAS issues -- no matter what your income.
The most important message though, if you think you're pregnant or may become pregnant, don't drink.
