Debate Over Healthcare Reform Heats Up In The Mountains
The debate over healthcare reform heats up in the mountains as the issue takes the national stage. Protestors rallied outside of Congressman Heath Shuler's office in Asheville today. They're concerned Shuler will support legislation that two House committees in Washington approved to reform the nation's healthcare system.
These protestors want government to stay out of healthcare reform while others in the mountains see this bill as the only way to rein in medical providers and insurance companies.
"I have health insurance through my employer that just went up to 200 dollars a week and our benefits got cut in half," said Fletcher resident Steve Minnick.
Minnick went to Washington last month and met with Shuler about healthcare reform. Steve and his wife, Tricia, had to move to Mexico because healthcare is cheaper. When their 401k's tanked, they had to move back to the mountains and get full-time jobs. Tricia has been denied insurance coverage several times because of a "pre-existing condition." The new legislation would stop that from happening.
