Water Labeling Debate

State lawmakers are back in session in Raleigh, and one of the issues they'll be debating concerns the labeling of spring water. Local bottlers say they are concerned about distributors who say their water is "mountain spring water" when it isn't. There are only about 20 springs in North Carolina that are state certified and have the seal of approval from the North Carolina Spring Water Association. A new proposed bill would create civil and criminal penalties if a label claims water is springwater when it's not. Well water or municipal water that is bottled isn't considered spring water by state standards. The bill passed the state Senate last session, and is now in committee before it moves on to the House.Water Labeling Debate (5/14/08)
