Like other college campuses across the southeast Western Carolina Universtity is dealing with dozens of cases of the H1N1 virus. Classes just started this week and they've already seen more than 60 suspected cases. Universites were warned by the C-D-C there would likely be a number of cases on their campuses. Western is no exception. Students have been coming in to the University Health Center daily with flu like symptoms. Officials say they likely have H1N1 or the Swine flu. The school handed out packets containing a thermometer, tissues, and hand sanitizing towelettes when students arrived for the semester. WCU is following the Centers for Disease Control guidelines. If they are ill they are encouraging students to wear masks in public areas and to stay isolated in their rooms. They're also being treated with Tamiflu. There is no federal guideline yet if there is a mass outbreak on campus. But, WCU is considering options. The school will be allotted a vaccination supply when it's available.
