Same Sex Couples March For Marriage Licenses
More than a dozen same-sex couples attempted to get marriage licenses Friday.
Organized by Asheville-based campaign for southern equality, hundreds of supporters lined up outside the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office to cheer on the couples. The cheers soon turned to sorrow as one by one the couples were denied a marriage license.
Hours earlier the group marched on the Greenville County Probate Court. In all, 13 same-sex couples applied for marriage licenses and were rejected.
The effort is part of a nationwide campaign, primarily in the south, to highlight what these couples say is discrimination against gays and lesbians.
