Lost & Found Purple Heart
A 90-year-old Rutherford County veteran gets his Purple Heart, that was lost in the mail almost seven-decades-ago.
George Hemphill says he sent it back home from France in 1944 and forgot about it. He was given the medal at a ceremony in Rutherfordton Sunday.
It was purchased by a Florida man in a Columbia, South Carolina antique store in 2000. The man paid $70.00.
The medal finally found its way to a group called "Purple Hearts Reunited" and then George Hemphill.
