Bear Park Debate

Some elders in Cherokee say it's time for bears to be freed from three bear parks on the reservation. They say they've been kept in cages and concrete pits too long.

In a resolution to tribal leaders, they're calling for licenses to be revoked from the businesses. A bear zoo owner agrees it's time for change and is already drawing up plans for a wildlife park with more space, dirt, trees, and water.

Chief Michell Hicks says it's time for laws governing captive animals to be re-evaluated, but he does not support removing the bears completely. Tribal Council plans more discussion at a work session next month   Rex Hodge
