Sequestration Impact on Smokies

The word in Washington, DC is "sequestration" and it means automatic spending cuts scheduled for March1st unless Congress takes action. If not, national parks like the Great Smoky Mountains National Park could see five percent cuts.

Rangers say they've identified certain campgrounds that would close, like the Balsam Mountain campground in North Carolina, and the Look Rock campground in Tennessee, identifying campgrounds that would have the least impact.

Rangers also expect to have fewer seasonal workers. That could affect response time for hazards on trails or for rescues, and fewer interpretive programs. They say any final decisions about closures would involve public input.
