Former Substitute Teacher Faces Sex Charges
A Candler man who taught at two mountain schools faces sex charges involving a 9-year-old boy.
Ryan Gavin was a substitute teacher at Stone Mountain School in Black Mountain and Rainbow Mountain Children's School in West Asheville.
"The victim in this case was not, and has never been, a student of his at any time," says Sgt. Dave Romick of the Asheville Police Department.
The 35-year-old has been charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child. In December, the boy told a nurse he was inappropriately touched by Gavin twice.
APD secured search warrants Thursday and seized employment records from both schools Gavin worked at. They say he also lead youth camping trips and was working with Buncombe County DSS to become a foster parent through the agency.
Police say no other victims have come forward.
