Teen Rescued After Mountain Bike Accident

Multiple rescue crews including the squad from McDowell County responded to an emergency call Wednesday at 4:30pm at a rural trail where a 13-year-old mountain biker had slipped off steep terrain and fallen off his bike. The boy had neck and back injuries.  EMTs at the scene said they had to stabilize his body before transporting him out of the woods.

He and other fellow campers go to Camp Mondamin which was what Ricky Wright with McDowell County Rescue said he was told by adult counselors with the campers. The trail has two openings one in McDowell County at a picnic area off Mill Creek Road outside Old Fort, and another entrance in Buncombe County at the Kitsuma Peak trail head.

"The call came in and it said possible neck and spine injuries," said Ricky Wright, with McDowell County's Rescue Squad. "We sent a crew in from the bottom where we're at now(at the campground). We sent a crew in from the top and we also have a crew from Black Mountain coming in."

"Just as you come off the peak from the Kitsuma peak there he was about 300 yards straight down. Probably half-a-mile on the trail conscious and alert," said Anthony Killough, a fireman with Black Mountain's Fire Department.

Crews brought the 13-year-old out on a special stretcher with a single wheel to roll him out of the narrow trail. They then put him into an ambulance that took him to be examined by doctors.

Two counselors and six campers returned from the trail uninjured. Counselors had no comment on the ride or what led up to the accident. Rescuers say there are safety guidelines riders should follow.

"Anytime it's muddy and you get rain like we get on these steep descents," said Killough. "You really have to use caution with the mud. Just because it causes things to get slippery."
