Gold Star Teen Camp
A group of kids from around the country are in Macon County for a special camp this week.
The teens all lost a parent in the Iraq and Afghan wars. 'Gold Star Teen Adventures' was created by Major Kent Solheim. Solheim is a U.S. Green Beret who was severely injured in the Iraq War. Solheim says he founded the camp because it is something he would want his own kids to experience if he had not made it home.
"You watch these kids and within 24 hours of getting together they are best of friends. I think that connection comes from what they have gone through," Solheim said.
"I know that they understand what I am going through. They can help if I have any problems," said Catherine Henry. Henry is 15 and her father died when she was six.
The 14 teens spent the week camping, hiking, and white water rafting around Western North Carolina. Local volunteers helped fund some of the trip.
