Concern Over Obamacare Rulings
Conflicting rulings over Obamacare lead to concerns over subsidies to North Carolina residents. On main streets in our mountain communities, people still have worries about the Affordable Care Act.
Federal judges in Washington say the law is not clear about subsidies going to people who bought insurance on federal exchanges, like people in North Carolina. They say because the wording is vague, the subsidies to low and middle income people are illegal.
"Well I think this announcement will potentially scare some people and make them nervous and that's why if they have questions they should call us," says certified health care navigator Jan Plummer with Mountain Projects. Plummer educates people about Obamacare at the community action agency in Waynesville.
In contrast to the Washington ruling, federal judges in Richmond, Virginia say the intent of the law to provide subsidies is clear, whether sign-up took place through a federal or state exchange.
Many expect to see this latest challenge go to the United States Supreme Court.
