UPDATE: Standoff in Spruce Pine
A 12-hour standoff in Spruce Pine ends with the suspect's death. Spruce Pine Police say 54 year-old Mark Robinson was found dead inside the home where he was barricading himself.
An officer was dispatched to the home on Sunnybrook Drive, Friday, after a neighbor reported a woman screaming for help. The officer found a woman in the street and said she had been seriously assaulted. Police say Robinson was at the front door of the home, pointing a rifle at the officer and the woman.
After getting the woman to safety, Spruce Pine Police called for backup from the Mitchell County Sheriff's Department, Yancey County Sheriff's Department, McDowell County Sheriff's Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
The woman was transported to Blue Ridge Regional and treated for injuries. Meanwhile, law enforcement made several attempts to contact Robinson throughout the day.
Officers say he discharged a firearm at least once. That night, an SBI robot made it inside the home to find Robinson had shot himself. Law enforcement found firearms and several fired casings around the home.
Officers say Robinson had a long history of assaults on law enforcement officers.
