Captain Bowen's Story

The Asheville Fire Department is taking what it learned from the tragic death of Captain Jeff Bowen, and sharing it with other departments.

The department has released a video about the fire that claimed Captain Bowen's life, and the changes it made to prevent that type of accident from happening again.

"I looked at Captain Bowen and he didn't look driven anymore and I knew something was wrong with him, and it was all so painfully clear, all these little signs I has chosen to ignore, we had chosen to move past as a company just kind of collided and I was like I can't believe we are in this situtation," says Jay Bettencourt with Asheville Fire and Rescue.

Firefighter Jay Bettencourt and Captain Bowen found themselves out of air, and disoriented from breathing toxic smoke while fighting the 4-alarm fire at 445 Biltmore Avenue. It happened on July 28th 2011.

We'll have more on the message in the video, and reaction from local firefighters tonight on News 13 at 11.
