Police: Impaired Driver Kills Motorcyclist
A truck hits a motorcyclist in downtown Asheville, killing the rider. Police charged 49-year-old John Allan Zabriskie, of Asheville, with felony death by vehicle, DWI, and making an unsafe movement.
Asheville Police Department responded to the crash at the intersection of Charlotte Street and Woodfin Place just after 9:00 p.m. Monday night. The victim in the fatality has been identified as 37-year-old, Joshua Allan Calhoun, of Asheville.
Police say Zabriskie was driving a 2004 Toyota pickup truck south on Charlotte St. Calhoun was driving a motorcycle north on Charlotte St. Zabriskie attempted to make a left turn onto the I-240 East on-ramp, but failed to yield right of way to the motorcycle, causing the pickup and motorcycle to collide. Calhoun died on scene.
Zabriskie is charged with felony death by motor vehicle. Police say impaired driving led to the motorcycle driver's death. Along with the felony death by motor vehicle charge, he also faces DWI and making an unsafe movement citations.
Zabriskie is free after posting a $25,000 bond. He is scheduled for a court appearance on the DWI and unsafe movement charges, October 9th.
