Double Fatal Accident in Transylvania County
A single car accident on Highway 64 in Transylvania County claimed the lives of two people on Wednesday morning.
Troopers say Michael Carden and Melinda Ponder, both of Transylvania County, died when their vehicle left the road.
Carden, 43, was the driver. Ponder, 35, was the passenger in the car. Speed could have been a factor, according to troopers.
Troopers say once the car hit the guardrail, it traveled along it, then skidded through a driveway and clipped several mailboxes, went off an embankment and hit a tree.
Trooper Chris Goodson says the curve may have taken Carden by surprise.
"It's definitely a long straightaway, and then you go into this long sweeping left-hand curve, and that does appear where he went off the roadway, striking the guardrail," Goodson said.
Troopers say there will be no autopsies or accident reconstructions.
Fog covered the area during the crash, but troopers don't believe it was a factor in the crash. They also say there are no problems with the highway or the curve when cars are traveling at a safe speed.
