U.S. Secretary of the Interior Speaks in Asheville
The U.S. Secretary of the Interior came to Asheville Wednesday, to push for land conservation.
Secretary Sally Jewell addressed a crowd outside the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center. She came to rally support for the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Jewell says that fund is vital to conservation, outdoor recreation and economic growth. "We're here to make the case for full funding at $900 million which is what congress intended when it passed back in 1964," she says.
Money for the conservation fund comes from offshore oil and gas leases paid to the U.S. government. The funding is due to expire soon unless lawmakers act to renew it, an effort that's stalled in congress.
