SC Rabies Exposure

Fourteen people in Anderson County were exposed to rabies from a kitten, according to a SC Department of Health & Environmental Control news release on Thursday.

Rabies can be a deadly viral disease if not caught before it hits the brain. But veterinarians say it usually does not show symptoms until that point, and then it's too late.

Vaccines for rabies are cheap, but treatment after exposure is expensive, and very uncomfortable."10 to 20 bucks," says Dr. Daniel Randall of Foothills Veterinary Hospital. "Depending on where you get it, there are different rabies vaccines. Some are good for 3 years, and that's the cost for dogs and cats. The cost for people is very different."
