Homeless man in Asheville Attacked

"I was just like, this is not happening," said Daniel Amos Johnson, bloodied, cut, and bruised.

Johnson, who is homeless, was attacked 1am Monday outside the French Broad Co-Op Grocery on Biltmore Avenue Downtown. The 30-year-old had been sleeping, he said, on a bench outside the Co-Op when he heard the noise of glass break.

"I was like don't do that, don't break a glass in the road and they were like you don't know who you're talking to," said Johnson who has multiple stitches in his bloodied and bruised nose from the attack. He said making the comment was enough to incite the attack. The suspects, he said, were a total of eight men, several in their late teens. Two are still at large.

"I was looking at them across the street from the A-loft Hotel when the ambulance showed up," said Johnson.  One suspect took a large ceramic flower pot from outside the Co-Op and hit Johnson over the head and then hit his face, he said.

"I really wasn't being intimidated, and that's what bugged them," he said. The suspects were picked up investigators said, outside Bouchon, a french bistro on Lexington Avenue.

Those charged in the incident including charges of vandalism to property both at the Co-Op and Bouchon are:
  • Compton Duaugherty, 21
  • Oshua Peak, 19
  • Timothy Hunter, 18
  • Devin Watkings, 19
  • Cameron Thompson, 19
  • There are outstanding warrants for Martiese Hines, 18, and Keith Green, 18.
Johnson told News 13 that he's been homeless since July. Even with severe lacerations to his face, and stitches on his nose, he wasn't sure where he would stay the night Monday. News 13 reached out to Eblen Charities. Staff there were able to assist Johnson. He made contact with staff at Mission Shelter, filled out paperwork, and wrote News 13 by text that he was "in my bed (at the shelter), goodnight, and thank you again."
