WCU Celebrates 125 Years
Western Carolina University celebrated the school's 125th anniversary Tuesday with a huge party in the main quad.
The marching band performed along with the cheerleading squad, while thousands of students, staff and alums were treated to food from barbecue to snow cones.
"The atmosphere of what we are and where we come from with our spirit deep down is great," junior and cheerleader Corrine Benze said. "It's just a big ol' birthday."
Attendance for this fall is estimated at over 10,000. School Chancellor David Belcher explained how the university has grown.
"One of the things we're doing in the Asheville area is expanding our engineering program over to the Biltmore Park site part of that is to meet the needs of businesses in the greater Asheville Hendersonville area," Belcher said.
The school will wrap up the year of celebrating with another event this December.
