Apartment Boom in South Asheville
There's something of a building boom in South Asheville, with new apartment developments popping up all over. At least 3 complexes are under construction right now.
Local realtors say it's no surprise that Asheville is growing. "We keep getting mentioned in the magazines and the breweries, it's just more and more people are saying they want to come and live in Asheville. The quality of life here is great," says Justin Purnell with Town Mountain Realty.
The endless list of things to do is enticing more and more people to move here. "A lot of people are the 20-30 somethings, the millennials, they want to be here for the outdoor activities because Asheville is a hip city," says Mike Miller, also with Town Mountain Realty.
But construction on one side of town may indicate more growth than others. There are three news apartment complexes under construction on Mills Gap Road, Sweeten Creek and Long Shoals. "The south end of town, topography wise, has less topographical challenges," says local developer, Rusty Pulliam with Pulliam Properties.
Pulliam says South Asheville is attractive for developers because it has the least physical challenges. "The other areas of towns are challenged by rivers and streams and hills and mountains that we just don't have south."
And it appears that developers are capitalizing on what the area has to offer, and at the same time meeting the need for housing. County leaders say South Asheville is seeing a growth in manufacturing and technology jobs and it also has several amenities. Not to mention a lot of good schools. "The fact that the Roberson School District is ranked as one of the top 10 best public school systems in the state. You got great private schools out here with Carolina Day School and Christ School," says Pulliam.
County leaders say the need for rental property is not only high in demand for people moving to Asheville, but retirees and empty-nesters are also looking for apartments.
