WWII Hero Memorial
A new memorial honors a World War II hero from Asheville.
Col. Robert K. Morgan died 10 years ago, but the installation between the Buncombe Courthouse and Asheville City Hall draws attention to his service. Morgan and his Memphis Belle Crew are notable for flying the first B-17 to complete 25 combat missions over Europe.
The location of the monument was chosen because during a historic fly-by, Morgan's crew tipped their left wing between the downtown structures.
"And it's very important we not forget him, and we're very grateful for the people who recognized that and have helped us pull this off," says committee member Carl Mumpower.
The memorial will be dedicated Friday, August 14th at noon, between the courthouse and city hall in downtown Asheville.
