43 Plant Workers Laid-Off
A mountain factory laid off 43 workers Wednesday.
Police officers were present when workers at the Wilsonart Laminates Plant in Fletcher got their walking papers.
Wilsonart spokeswoman, Alison Demartino, says the company is restructuring its factories across the country.
News 13 spoke to one of the workers who asked us to conceal his identity because of legal concerns. He says there have been rumors for weeks about possible layoffs.
"On my way leaving, they stopped me, and told me that we needed to have a meeting, and they terminated me when we had the meeting."
Wilsonart officials say the 43 were terminated because their jobs now require workers with different skills.
Demartino says the company needs new people to handle new equipment required to keep the company competitive.
According to the termination documents, Wilsonart is assisting former employees with medical and retirement benefits and is referring workers to the state's Joblink career centers.
